Windows XP Boot-up Screen of Death

The occurrence of a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is one of the most feared issues for any digital signage operator that's using Windows (note: I'm not anti-Windows, similar things can happen on any O/S) . Unfortunately, due to the static nature of pictures, it isn't obvious that the digital signage screen featured here defines a new type of crash/issue to fear: the WXPBSOD.

The rear-projection screen that I caught in Montreal's CN building was somehow stuck at a Windows XP Boot-up Screen of Death. The little animated bar underneath the rainbow-like window frame XP users are all too familiar with was stopped in the left position and the boot-up sequence never made it past this screen.

This is quite perplexing--I'm pretty sure I've never seen or heard of something like this happening. I'm thinking the most likely cause is a hardware failure and it made the video jam.

Although this isn't as bad as this BSOD at this Vegas hotel, it still leaves a bad impression. I wonder who installed the signage? Comment if you know.

ScreenScape Digital Signage at Award-winning Canadian Golf Destination

Peninsula Lakes Golf, an award winning Golf course in the Niagara region, has announced that they've chosen Charlottetown, PEI, and Oakville, Ont.'s ScreenScape "Venue Networking" for digital signage throughout their clubhouse.

Members will now receive information such as tournament results, special events and golf industry news on various flat screens located throughout their clubhouse.

X2O Media Teams Up with PSAV to Provide Hospitality Digital Signage

Montreal's X20 Media has partnered with PSAV Presentation Services, a supplier of audiovisual and event technologies to the hospitality industry.

As part of the alliance, X2O Media will provide digital signage-related services such as content creation, management, distribution, monitoring, and integration to PSAV customers.

PSAV and X20 had previouslt worked together to setup digital signage at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare hotel in Rosemont, Ill. The installation included thirteen 46-inch touchscreens powered by X2O’s Xpresenter platform. Other than access to information regarding events, service and flights, the interactive screens provide wayfinding via a 3D map.

NY Grand Hyatt Running Omnivex

New York City's Grand Hyatt Hotel is managing its new digital displays with Concorde, Ont.'s Omnivex software.

Located in midtown Manhattan and hosting many conferences in its 55,000 square feet of meeting space, the hotel added a digital signage network to enhance guest experience and facilitate visitor navigation.

Omnivex's software interfaces with the hotel’s scheduling system, Daylight, to automatically update screens throughout the building.

The Grand Hyatt installed several players, most being connected to lobby, hallway and conference area screens, displaying way-finding, scheduling, conference details, promotions, news and weather, and promoting the hotel's restaurants. Another single player is dedicated to the in-room information channel, displaying upcoming meetings and events taking place at the hotel.
No outside advertising is shown--the hotel only promotes in-house services, restaurants, atractions, and Hyatt's Gold Passport membership program.

Surrey Issues RFP for Digital Billboards

Surrey, B.C.'s, municipal government has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to install and manage up to ten digital billboards near its bridges in an effort to raise additional revenues.

The city will likely start with a three-sign pilot project before the program is expanded further. A decision is expected end of 2009 / beginning 2010.

Projected annual advertising revenue from digital billboards near the high-traffic areas could total $200,000.

ScreenScape Digital Signage at Red Barn Bingo Hall

Oshawa, Ont.'s Red Barn Auditorium will be using ScreenScape's “Venue Networking” web-based digital signage solution in its bingo hall.

The gaming facility will focus on highlighting the 40+ local and national charities its bingos benefit. Non-profit organizations are given a free ScreenScape producer account to help with networking, fundraising and promotion within the community.

Based on the initial success of the communications initiative, Red Barn's management has immediate plans to deploy ScreenScape across the other five bingo halls in their network.

Ek3 Buys Enixa Media

Montreal company Enixa Media is now under the management of London, Ontario digital narrowcasting provider, EK3.

Enixa Media, Inc. managed and installed a network of in-store digital advertising displays for advertising its clients’ products and services in Canada. Its network mostly includes Quebec grocery stores.

Interestingly, although the buyer has denied it, EK3 is most likely also for sale. As Philippe Gauvin at ADN Montreal put it, the purchase was likely to boost its portfolio of assets with a "working" network. The sale will also allow previous Enixa owner Transcontinental to improve cash flow during hard times.

Wendy's Franchise gets Digital Menu Boards

Memsbury, Co. LTD, a Wendy’s franchise located in Ontario, Canada, has deployed a WAND Corporation Digital Menu Board system in their new restaurant. WAND's creative division was also selected to develop the menu board content for the Canadian market.

The WAND Digital Restaurant is powered by an enterprise-level solution that allows pinpoint control over prices, configurations and digital content.

Four horizontal digital menu boards display professional-quality images of strategically-promoted food items.

The boards run on the WAND Universal Controller, which also is capable of acting as the store-manager's work station or kitchen video display system (KVS) controller.

Toronto-based journalist and Sixteen:Nine blog writer Dave Haynes recently launched pressDOOH, a PR service focused on his favorite new media, digital signage and digital out-of-home.

Services include press release, case study and white paper development, copywriting for your website or corporate blog (ghost blogging), and business proposal writing. The pressDOOH firm will also provide writing and editing services to international firms wanting to enter English-speaking markets.

ADCENTRICITY Launches Audience-research Service

Digital OOH media aggregator and strategist ADCENTRICITY has launched the Research Lite service, providing clients audience research to evaluate the effectiveness of their ad campaigns in DOOH.

Research Lite studies are conducted across multiple DOOH networks and venues and will be offered in two flavours: pre-packaged and customized audience-research studies.

The service will be performed by Toronto's Peoplecount, an award-winning research firm and supplier of audited out-of-home circulation data.

Bollé Communications Expands OOH Network to Oncology Clinic

Quebec OOH network manager and digtal signage services provider Bollé Communications increases its number of B-TV locations in the health sector to five with its recent installation at Hôpital Honoré-Mercier in Saint-Hyacinthe.

It was thanks to financing provided by Fondation Guy Bourgeois « contre le cancer » that the screen found in the waiting room of the hospital's external oncology clinic was made possible.

Tips, service offerings and other health-related information will be displayed on-screen and managed from Bollé's offices.

D'Alesio Foodland Joins the ScreenScape Network

Canadian grocery store D'Alesio's Foodland has chosen ScreenScape, a SaaS digital signage solution provider based in Charlottetown, PEI and Oakville, ON, for a 6 screen deployment at their Hamilton location.

The grocer will use the screens to alert customers of promotions and entertain them while they shop. ScreenScape's venue networking approach will also allow D'Alesio's Foodland to add new lines of revenues through local advertisers. To stay connect to the Hamilton community, D'Alesio's Foodland also plans to use their screens to help promote local charities and events.

New Wayfinding Software by ITESmedia

ITESmedia, a Quebec interactive kiosk solutions provider for the real-estate industry, expanded its product offering with its new IMMOmedia DIRECTORY wayfinding system.

When combined with a touch screen, their new SaaS product gives office building visitors fast and easy access to information on tenants and company employees.

Zoom Media Wins Spring Rolls Restaurant Chain Contract

Zoom Media Canada increased it advertising assets recently by entering into an exclusive contract with restaurant chain Spring Rolls. Thirty digital screens will be installed in the restrooms of the chain’s Toronto venues.

I find it a little funny that the media firm words it as being an exclusive partnership. Getting restaurants to sign 3-year exclusivity contracts with them for bathroom advertising is Zoom's m.o.--I doubt the Spring Rolls people went out "looking for a digital signage partner". Whatever the case, its a good deal for them, you can read the full press release below:

Test Drives Via Mobile Invitations

Here's a nice example of what I like to describe as "using digital signage as middle media": BMW Canada is using LCD screens in Toronto to invite people to register for a test drive via their mobile phones. The two 40" digital displays, installed close to an enticing z4 Roadster "parked" outside the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, are part of BMW’s ‘An Expression of Joy’ campaign which began in June.

Both the screens and the platform onto which the retractable roofed-vehicle is perched, entice the audience to text "DRIVE" via SMS and setup a test drive with their local BMW dealer--a perfect example of using digital signage or out-of-home as middle media where the call-to-action leads the audience to another secondary medium, in this case their mobile phone.

Windsor, Ont.-based digital signage provider Wireless Ronin Technologies Canada was honored with a product innovation award at the 19th annual Windsor/Essex Chamber of Commerce business excellence awards.

Living Lighting Signage Lit Up By Adflow

Home decor retailer Living Lighting has begun using Adflow Networks powered digital signage in their participating locations across Ontario.

Large format LCD's have been installed to display messaging for both customers and store staff. Living Lighting is reducing its traditional static POP ads in an effort to improve and modernize their promotional communications.

The content loop during store hours will include home decor and "green"-lighting tips interspersed with product merchandising messages. During other times, franchisee and employee-targeted messages will be dissiminated.

BroadSign Powers New Avanti Interactive 6-sheets

BroadSign was chosen to control the new interactive 6-sheets that are being setup at Gloucester Quays, in the UK, by Avanti Screenmedia and Peel Advertising Ltd.

The enclosures built by Esprit Digital house two 57" screens, one for advertising and the second dedicated to interactive wayfinding.
